My favorite is to nunstitch the edge, clip the long sides close and fringe top and bottom. If I don't like my back I'll do this twice and use a running stitch through the nunstitch to hide the back. (I have more details on this technique in our finishing technique forum)

I've also seen blanket stitched edges clipped for a bookmark as well.

What I do is I do nunstitch around the ornament/bookmark etc. Then I stitch an identical rectangle/square around a second piece of fabric. You can make your item two sided if you like.
