Posts: 934 07/18/07 08:19:12 Rotation Analyst	Tags : None I know I've been pretty quiet lately, due to moving and job and all, but I have actual progress to report. First, I have new pictures so you can see my progress on my WIPs (none on EGS and Henry VIII, sorry) http://mywebpages.comcast.net/peter.thornton/kate/html/works.html The one thing you probably can't tell is I reached the top of Elisabeth's head! This means I can start stitching down (I'm going to try to stitch the entire top line of pages, and then step down left to right) Second, there are 2 WIPs missing from that page, Autumn Queen and Gift of Peace. That is because they're both finished! I finished Autumn Queen in April, and Gift of Peace this month. (Sorry, no pictures of either yet. I'll get them up when they're framed/finished.) I also finished the Christmas ornaments (30 on a piece of fabric from a kit) that I've been working on forever! Now, my concern. If you look at my WIPs, there are several that are close to finishing (within a year): Willow Fairy, Sleeping Beauty, Parrot Tulips, and EGS. EGS is already mostly on hold until I work out what the replace the alphabet with, but the others are live. I'm guessing I want one more slot reduced from my rotation (getting me to 6 projects a quarter which should give me time for small projects that I don't have now), but I am worried that I"ll finish everything at the same time and then just have a lot of new pieces and then stay with pieces in the same level of finished. So, should I start a new project next quarter? My opinion - I would start something new so you have a project that would get 1/3 in when the rest are finishing so you don't have all brand new starts. Another option is that Sleeping Beauty looks really close to being done - maybe push through on her and finish up and add a new start into her cleared spot so you still have the same number of WIPs but have something new that will see progress before the other HDs. Posts: 295 07/18/07 10:24:35 Never Bored!	Well, I may not be the best person to offer advice, but I'll offer my thoughts about your rotation. I'd double up on one of the projects close to completion (you know, like 1 2 1 3 1 4 1 5 1 6 1 7) until it's finished. Don't replace it in the rotation. Then do the same thing with the next one in line, but replace it when complete. Return to your regular rotation, and your issue with multiple projects finishing at the same approximate time can be further resolved by replacing them with projects of different sizes/complexity. Posts: 934 07/18/07 13:17:05 Rotation Analyst	Thanks all! Unfortunately, I really like seeing my projects 4 times a year, which means I have a quarterly rotation. Right now, I can fit 6-7 rotation slots in a quarter (with no small projects). I'm hoping to get to 5 big projects, 1 medium project slot, and smalls for any leftover time. Right now I have 6 big projects (not counting EGS which is on hold) but I did work on Gift of Peace this round. So hopefully I'll get some time in on Henry this round, but I can't count on it. But, there's no way I can do a focus slot. My one thought is to start pieces of different sizes when I do get there (for example, I think my next 3 are Mighty Samurai, Sweet Pea Gazebo, and Not Forgotten, which I estimate at 200, 60, and 100 hours respectively). That might also help. Maybe I'm just trying to find an excuse to start something. Posts: 2319 07/18/07 16:49:19 Rotation Scientist	OK here's what I suggest. Stitch all all your pieces next quarter first. If after that there is any time before the next quarter left you can start one of the new pieces even if it's only for one day. If not try again next quarter. I'm trying to remember if you do time, or goals to determine when to switch pieces. You could always do something like half the time on two of the almost done pieces and double up on the third, or choose smaller goals and larger goal for the third. This way you finish one of the almost done pieces sooner, and the others later, without going the full scale focus piece method. This way you can add one new piece sooner. I think the reason the itch to start something new is so strong is due to the fact that you've finished some big pieces recently, so if you can finagle your rotation a bit to accommodate it, it wouldn't be so bad. It's just working out something that makes you happy. I'd probably start Sweet Pea Gazebo, or Not Forgotten first, to add that size variety to your rotation first. Posts: 850 07/19/07 09:46:50 Biscornu Babe	They all look great Kate! If you really want to make time for some smaller items, make a slot for them in your rotation! Say once you finish one big project, use that slot for a small one for one quarter (which you should be able to finish in one rotation) then add in one of the medium or large items in that slot the next quarter, that way your larger items are staggered too, and you won't suddenly run out of big pieces to work on. Next big WiP you finish, start a small item for one quarter, then another medium or large....etc. That way you also get some little happy dances when you least expect it too! -Kathy My Webshots

I'm actually going to go through my rotation as normal this quarter, and continue thinking about what type of tweak I might want next quarter. I am going to see if I can add back a focus slot (for smalls), but it's becoming less likely the more I think about it. I'll probably have to go with the "small" rotation slot for pieces under 30 hours. Posts: 56 07/28/07 05:07:46	Your WIP's are stunning Kate, thanks for sharing. As for rotation advice, my head is spinning after reading this thread, I think my brain is in rotation. I think you should finish whichever piece is closest to finishing, then go back to your regular rotation with a new start in place of the finished piece.
